I do them on occasion but its fun you brought this up. Just read an article about "circus dumbbell" (thats what they are called over here in strongman comps) and it got me hooked, doing em tomorrow in the shed.

Ignorant question here... Is there a functional difference between a "circus dumbbell" and a standard dumbbell of the same weight?

The actual thickness and length make it so you cant press it as easily as a normal heavy DB.

I use these every couple weeks as a way to help hit those stabilizer muscles real hard. I love 1 arm presses in the 100-140 pound range. I think it also helps that connection between legs and arms in the push press.

I started doing one arms last year. Much more fun for me than trying to swing two heavy dumbbells up.
