The old timers took weeks off. Heck, Ronnie Coleman takes months off. A week off every few months won't hurt you.

I always stay away from the gym during the final week before a powerlifting meet, along with the week after a meet. My muscles never atrophied and disappeared. In fact, it helps to occasionally deload or take a week off. It allows the body to fully recover from a month or two of intense training and/or a competition.
