Welcome to the board DW. Its good to see you here and to hear your insights on powerlifting. You pull like an 18 wheeler, any specific motivation fueling that? how long have you been lifting?

Thanks. I've been lifting since my days in high school, so it's been approximately 10 years because I'm 27 and I started when I was either 16 or 17. However, I wasn't going to the gym nearly as much when I was in the Army (Sep. '01 - Nov. '03) due to field exercises, a combat deployment (Iraq), and being exhausted from the daily grind. After receiving my honorable discharge in late 2003, I started being consistent with my training again in 2004, but it wasn't until 2007 that I fixed my form.

Motivation? I could list a few of the major sources.

1) anyone who said that I was too small or too weak in the past
2) the people who are still talking trash about my old videos even after I became a legit powerlifter
3) one of my best friends as a kid, Roger Ling (R.I.P.), who died in Iraq after I returned from my deployment
4) my brave girlfriend, Suzy, who is currently fighting cancer

Nice. Do you plan on staying at your current weight to compete? and have you contemplated following most powerlifters choice of just bulking like crazy?
Hell we all started off in different places, I've been skinny, I've been fat... bottom line is i worked hard and ended up doing what i had to do to get what i wanted. And it def looks that you've done the same.
Sorry to hear about your friend and you girl. Shes got my best of luck going out to her.

I did strongman training and competitions in 2005 and 2006, but I was always too light, like around 155. Bulking was easier in 2007, when I got up to 175-180. I was in the 181 weight class when I started competing in powerlifting, May 2008. During the transition from 2008 to 2009, I cut weight to be even more successful in the 165 class compared to the 181s, exceeding my best total in the 181s as a 165 lifter. Making weight has been getting difficult lately, so my plan is to remain in the 165s for as long as possible, then move up again to 181.

I just want to say welcome to the board.

I saw you were friends with Tony on Facebook. Prior to that I had found your Youtube channel and was always impressed by your effort. I really have to compliment you on your dedication to improvement. Looking forward to learning about your training approach.

Ex-Army here, Ft. Lee 266th QM Battalion.

Thanks, bro. I think the Army instilled a lot of the "never quit" mentality toward physical fitness and life, which carried over to weight training after I got out.

Thanks.

Wow. I was in Iraq during that time with the 4th ID too, specifically 1-67 Armor in 2nd Brigade. What was your unit?
