Rick brought this up to me a while back, I was doing my normal posting videos and what not. I was counting the bar for 45lbs, well IBB went and purchased the same machine I have and stood on a scale while having the smith bar on his shoulders. Low and be hold it was only 25lbs, so all my lifts were 20lbs lighter. Since then IBB and myself leave a set of 10's on the bar to make the bar 45lbs. Our smith has no counter weights just the slides for the up and down movement, no weight supporting at all.

this is why i don't like them. the reason for it not weighin in correctly on your shoulders is cause technically there are three points of weight disbursement. i personally like the adjustable spotters on my bench at home. if i fail i just let it fall safely on those.

i know what your talkin about. the machine at the gym has a broken one of those on one side.
i guess the point i was tryin to make is that alot of guys avoid the "free" moving weight bench because they have no spotter then use the smith just do to its safety. what i'm sayin is i feel just as safe with my home bench as i do on any smith i have ever used. |

the biggest reason i like to do Squats on the smith is i can control the weight better and spend more energy on stablzing my lower back.... in '02 i got hit from behind and bent over backwards.... back has never been the same since....

i know what ya mean......in 97' i had two car accidents back to back. one a rollover(snow storm) another a head on i was a passenger in where a lady decided to turn left on a yield. been through therapy a few times now and as recent as a couple years ago. i used to use smith alot after that for the same reasons. but for me i wasn't satisfied with that and i stripped myself back to basics and started liftin heavy on everything and have found the more my core strength grows from heavy deads, squats, presses, and cleans the better i become. i am starting now to be able to have 300 lbs on my shoulders and not have it feel like my spine is being shoved out my tail pipe. at this point i am glad i stepped away from the smith and just started over.
