Proper box squat form...which I'm pretty sure that was his question.

Lol in fact screw it... Greu get some multi ply gear, briefs, wraps and a find a place which has a monolift. Since that's how the big boys do it.
There we go, quality advice. Making the forum a better place!

In my opinion, if your squat form isn't already strong, you risk developing bad habits by box squatting. Even if you do have good form, you still risk developing bad habits.
Box squats force me to sit back more. Doesn't sound bad on paper, but when you don't realize the changes it is causing you to make, it can complicate things. I was picking up near-instantaneous knee tendinitis from box squats and couldn't figure out why for years. After a few conversations here I realized it that box squats were forcing me to push my hips back more than normal, I wasn't making other adjustments so that I could handle this properly, and was injuring myself. I recommend spending several years working on squats. Once you have a natural and strong barbell squat, and some good guys that can point out form changes (in person or on the net), then try box squats if they make sense. With that said, many natural raw lifters simply don't need them. There are some big squatters here who never use them. Only point being that while some view them as necessary, they aren't. They can be a useful tool, in the right program, under a good coach, but beginners and intermediates still need a ton of free squats. Adding a variation like box squats can create a lot of bad habits that lifters aren't aware of if they have no coaching.

The "break at the hips" form is not used by everyone, and can change an inexperienced lifter's form without them knowing.
I do not break at the hips, nor does Eric Lilliebridge. We are break at the knees squatters. Point being, a beginner rarely knows of these differences, nor how to adapt to the unique changes that come from box squatting. Not everyone is a hip break, low bar squatter. Not everyone has to be. Box squats push you in that direction. They can change a lifter's form without them realizing it. Therein lies the major problem with box squats for me.

Come on now Fazc, who's got the attitude now?
Greu- Box squats were made popular by Westside. In fact, it's basically the only type of squatting they do, BUT, you have to remember that all of Westside's training is for geared lifters. When you squat in a multiply or canvas suit the suit takes almost all of the weight at the bottom, so you're essentially sitting down. That's why a geared squat is usually so much slower than a raw squat, because you have to load the suit. Wide stance, low bar, butt back squatting is all about loading the suit to get the most pop possible. That's why for a geared squatter it doesn't get better than box squats. They can sit back, then explode up just like they have their gear on. But for a raw squatter, it's more about rebound from the bottom. I've learned that box squats just don't train the raw squat like they do for the geared squat. They could still be usefull, I think. High box squats (anything above parallel) are useful for overload, and sometimes it's nice to move heavier weights than you're used to, but the best thing for the raw squats is just to squat.
