Last year, i was experiencing lower back discomfort (left side around the lumbar region) during squat singles. Now, having moved to taekwondo, I am facing a similar asymmetry problem - only this time its primarily the "leg lifting muscle" on the left (and some lower back cramps after long sessions, again on the left side). So I figure that this is an issue with the psoas muscles that tie up the lumbar and the inner thighs and abets the "leg lifting" exercises. Any suggestions on strengthening and stretching the psoas, ladies and gentlemen? |

Hanging leg raises (as far as I know) should hit them pretty well.

Squats, Lunges,and Deadlifts.
The psosas is a comparatively small mucle and usually does not require direct stimulation, If you have a lateral muscle imbalance ( ( which would encompass more than a single muscle) you may want to first, double check form and then add some unilateral work. One leg squats, side lunges, dumbell lunges, etc. Just one man's opinion. As for stretching- google is your friend. ( and so is a chiropractor)

Agree...it's more likely that your psoas muscles are tight than weak... get a knowledgeable person to palpate it for you. You can do it yourself but it's harder to target and press into as effectively on your own.
