i was just thinking short term, i mean a gallon of water weighs about 8ibs, and a pony holds 15, so do the math thats 120ibs right there not counting the weight of the keg its self, plus id rather not get a bigger one till i figure out how to lift the small one first. i'm thinking about making a slosh pipe also

You can get a full-sized keg and learn how to lift that while empty, then gradually fill it with water.
I'm just sayin, out of all the people I've seen do keg training, I've never seen a pony keg. Don't be a girl.

I did a lot of this stuff this summer with a group of my buddies. First we made a sandbag and did a lot of stuff with that. We also used a keg that we had throwing contests with and also filled with water to do some other fun stuff. We had somewhat of a sled that we would drag and bearcrawl with to see who could get further before collapsing. Pushing my truck was another good exercise. You can basically use anything heavy.
I would also suggest a full sized keg, the less water you have in there the more it will slosh around and mess with you. Just keep filling it as you get stronger. Another thing we used were large rocks. Just find a rock pick it up, or throw it.

Kegs, 55gal drums, sandbags, atlas stones, tires, field stones (400+lbs, not like a pebble you turn up tending your garden), tires... man, I love all this stuff.
If interested in a few quick and easy "odd" implements you can get your hands on for cheap, let me know. I've got all kinds of tricks up my sleeves.

Feel free to share some tips. Would like to hear how you approach training.

I have a lever that I lift all day in my studio.
Also, I have a huge-ass slosh pipe that I enjoy carrying when I have the time and/or are not feeling nauseated already

I would be curious to hear how big you made yours. These "little" guys are good for training overhead squats or step ups, as it forces you to make some dynamic correction to body position and balance, but it lacks the punch that something like a chain yoke has for core stabilization. |
