Deadlift rep question
Question for you guys:
On heavy deadlift sets, sets where there is no touch and go, how long do you take between reps? On my top sets, I have the most success when I take approx 1-3 seconds to reset. In other words, I bring the bar down to the ground. Without letting go of the bar, I straighten out my knees/lift up my butt. I then bend my knees/bring my butt back down into the deadlift start position, tighten up my back and pull. All while taking 1-3 heavy breaths. Is this cheating? Is this normal? Am I taking too long between reps or does it even matter? Thoughts and comments are appreciated. |

Each deadlift rep should be performed only when form is reset and mental focus is there. This is no different than squats, or heavy benches for that matter. Sometimes on rep sets for these lifts I pause for a split seconds to get my head on straight. |
No, you're not cheating, BigJosh. For me, part of deadlifting is a rhythm. I treat every rep of every set as a single: up, down, relax the grip, reset the grip, big breath, pull. Like BtB said, the bar may be on the floor for two or three seconds. That's all part of the rhythm that helps me get through an extended set (anything more than a single). I've even heard of some people (though I've never seen it) who will stand up between each rep. I don't suppose there's anything wrong with that either. It will take most folks a minute or two to begin recovering from a moderate to heavy pull. Pausing for a couple of seconds probably is not a factor.

this is good to know, i normaly take a few secounds between heavy deadlift reps.

I tend to not take too long between reps in a set, usually no more than a few seconds, with a maximum of around ten seconds, but that max is usually only when I get fatigued toward the end of a high-rep set. Your time between reps sounds about right.

Max rest time is 60-90seconds since that would be the time given in a competition (strongman). The real goal is why are you doing reps. There is no cheating if its not a competition, its just training.

I normally take 1-2 seconds. Probably no longer than 10I seconds ever. I often don't reset anything unless I absolutely have to.

Great. Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess what I'm doing is the norm. I have found personally if I don't take these 2-3 seconds to 'regroup', my form is not solid and I can't pull as well.

This is how we make our new guys do it. They are required to treat each rep as an individual rep, no matter how long it takes between reps. They have to regroup, re-setup on every rep. This is the only way to perfect their form.
After they get there form down we I'll let them do some touch and go reps with heavy writs. More of a confidence builder by that time. |
