That's the golden question. There is no sane reason not to have face savers.

I have them on my bench. I know Jturner does too.

Even in that video the spotters weren't doing their jobs, you should always be prepared for the worst when spotting and that includes having you hands locked underneath the bar.

The safety bars are a great feature! There are a couple issues though. The first one being that not every lifter benches with a large enough arch, I know that even though I arch my back, I would barely clear the safety bar most times.

The second being that if a lifter isn't following the motion of bringing the bar slight back towards their face when they are pressing, it will drop on their ribs if they drop it. The bars won't protect against that.

You guys are acting like spotters are highly trained professionals. I am sure 99% of the time, the meet director has to beg to get spotters for a meet.

Toughest thing to get at a meet is enough experienced spotters.
It's hard, dirty work and hardly anyone wants to do it more than once.

The meet director is also at he mercy of whoever he can find to loan him equipment. Furnishing both the warm-up area and the platform(s) is expensive.

Wow, they absolutely saved his life. Which solidifies Babs' question -- WHY aren't these standard?!

PS -- The kid in the red shirt didn't look very useful :/

I'm pretty sure the safety racks for bench are mandatory in any IPF meet. The Racks are adjustable for height so the lifters get a rack height and a safety rack height. I usually put them pretty low so there is no chance of me hitting them, I may change my approach after seeing some of these clips.
