I've seen articles that say adults should have a fiber intake of 30-40g daily. That's a lot if your diet sucks...like mine.
I supplement with fiber chews, a couple with each meal helps me get close to 30g.

Fibre is a strange thing, it can constipate some people; well, some types of fibre can, more to the point. Fibre can also exacerbate certain conditions such as IBS with some doctors still insisting that more fibre is the key to controlling the issue when it clearly isn't for some people.
As long as you are having a bowel motion, at least once per day, you are consuming enough fibre. If you're constipated, eat a little more fibre; make sure to get insoluble fibre as well as soluble fibre in to your diet. To work out intestinal transit time, eat sweetcorn and watch for when it appears the other end, so-to-speak. Flaxseed, eaten whole, can also be used successfully for this, because they cannot be broken down due to the hard exterior; which is why they need to be ground to have any significant impact nutritionally. In addition, remember that exercise will also improve transit time.

My cousin actually had a blocked intestine. She went to the ER and they gave her some crap to drink, and now she has to take fiber pills. I believe she just follows the directions on the bottle.
