Fat cells
You here the talk about burning fat. This is a little misunderstood.
You don't per say BURN fat cells you burn the energy stored in the fat cell. Think of a fat cell as a balloon. The more energy it stores the bigger it gets. When you (burn fat) you are burning the energy stored in the cell. This courses it to collapse and shrink. BUT it is still there. However you can build new fat cells. So the key is to maintain a healthy weight to prevent the increase of fat cells. The more fat cells build the harder it is to shed the layer, like the more flat balloons you have the more space they take up. To actually loose fat you need liposuction. |
Very good points here Rich. I think the masses are very misguided when it comes to the concepts of body composition and changing body composition, as eveidenced by most people believing they "need to loose weight," when they really need to reduce the layer of body fat they have which may or may not end up being a change in weight one way or another. A good example is my own composition. I weigh about 215 at approx. 20% body fat, but I would like to weigh 225 at about 10% bodyfat. Whenever I tell a non-lifter this, they simply cannot comprehend how someone could want to gain weight and how that could possibly be accompanied by a reduction in body fat.

nice thread Rich.
This is definitely an argument for Lean bulking rather than 'all you can eat' bulking (for competitors at least) the less fat cells you have to burn the energy out of, the better the result will be :) Carl. |

Only keep enough stores to keep gaining LBM. To much extra bulk is counter productive for your goal end results. |
Trevor makes a good point, especially for those beginners that are trying to decide if they want to cut or bulk. The simple act of building muscle will reduce a person's body fat percentage, even if they don't lose any fat at all.

The point here is you NEVER EVER loose fat. It only shrinks down as you burn the energy stored in the cells.
Your body is happy as a clam to add fat cells but your body can't eliminated AKA burn them. Once your body adds/creates a fat cell its yours for life. |
