Default Regarding milk

Let me start by first saying that I am not lactose intolerant in the slightest, so far as I know. I've been drinking milk as long as I can remember up till recently - which has been more sporadic.

But what are your views on the pasteurized milk that we drink today? Some will say we can't even digest the nutrients (other than sugars) due to the processing, and others say it's perfectly fine.

Thoughts?

I drink a litre in every workout, it hasn't killed me yet. My 14 month old son drinks half a litre every day. If he's not digesting the nutrients then I want to know how the **** he keeps getting bigger.

No doubt raw milk is better for you than pasteurised stuff. But pasteurised milk is good for you.

Every time I wonder if I should down another litre, I remember what Rippetoe said, baby mammals drink milk, and you sir are a baby mammal.

Sure, I just like to get thoughts from others sometimes. I experiment quite a bit.

For example, I'm finding out today that peanuts don't seem to agree with my stomach much...

I drink a quart of whole milk with whey daily to get the calories without having to eat a load. I haven't had any issues with it, so far...

I didn't have access to a lot of protein choices in college so I always pounded 3-4 glasses of milk at the cafeteria with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Just on the subject of lactose-intolerance, some might find this interesting:

The Myth of Lactose Intolerance [eScholarship]

The general thrust of it is that lactose intolerance is a bit overblown. Even those who are truly deficient in lactase (which, the article admits, is a lot of us) can tolerate moderate amounts of dairy produce with no problem. It's unfortunate that none of the studies look at a quart of milk a day, but there you go.

Interestingly, many people who believe they are lactose intolerant actually aren't - whatever symptoms they have aren't due to ingesting milk. It's because when we see that A follows B ( e.g. gas follows drinking milk), we assume that A causes B (the gas was caused by drinking milk), but that isn't necessarily the case.

It suggests that IBS is often mistaken for lactose intolerance.

I haven't had milk in my house for 10 years. And thus haven't drunk it for 10 years. Don't see any reason why I should. I love the flavor and have thought about drinking it again just to be able to get more calories and protein without having to actually eat more. I do eat Greek yogurt daily and cheese almost daily. If I could get my hands on some raw milk I would definitely be drinking it again. Dairy farmers want you to drink as much as you can every day.

Try pasteurised. It's readily available.
