I do conditioning directly after my workouts. That leaves my off days to just rest and recover. But of course I'm not running 30 miles a week

I think you can do both especially as a beginner. Just train as much as you want for a while, it will not make that big of difference for a while.
Most of my training career I have had to do serious conditioning for sports. For example, I would lift right after 2 hour rugby practices which were basically 2 hours of conditioning. Sometimes I would lift right before rugby practice. Rugby has the most serious conditioning I have ever seen. So I think you can do it as long as you eat enough and sleep enough.

Everytime in the past I've done conditioning after workout I've lost strength, so now I do my conditioning on my off days.
Lets keep in my mind, my conditioning was basically just boxing.
