Soreness usually comes from the cells that connect the muscle fibers, not from the muscles themselves.

To add, muscle soreness is usually caused by stresses that are much greater than your body is used to. This can be starting a new exercise, doing a more sets/reps, or using a weight much higher than usual.
Always gauge progress by numbers and visualizations, not soreness or burn. Bigger arms or legs (measured w/tape), 10lbs on your squat, you can now see 4 abs instead of two rolls of fat, body weight is down 6lbs, etc. |
