I'm Mike from the UK. So glad I joined this forum. I'm 20 years old and 6'3" @ 185. I have a goal weight of 210 lbs and have just begun 5x5. I just want to pack on as much mass as possible as I have been skinny all my life. One of my friends was in a similar position and had great results with GOMAD and 5x5. What do you guys recommend? - I'm not too worried about putting on a bit of fat in order to bulk up. Cheers. |

A 5x5 focused on strength gains is a solid choice.
Did you have a specific 5x5 in mind?

GOMAD is okay, but a little extreme. I prefer 1/2 GOMAD and fill the rest in with MEAT.

MEAT. And lots of it. If you need recipe ideas, drop in over here at Brute Eats
I'll leave the program specifics to BtB and others that know what they're doing, but a good 5x5 and 5000 calories a day will give you some amazing results after several months.

Just the stronglifts 5x5.
Workout A: Squat, Bench Press, Rows Workout B: Squat, Overhead Press, Deadlift. 3 x per week, alternating A and B adding 5 lbs each week. |

Sounds like a plan. Although, when you get to your sticking point, which you will, don't sacrifice form for numbers. Check your ego and train smart.

What are your opinions on 'cheat days'/ 'dirty bulking' - double cheeseburgers etc. As I said, I'm fairly skinny so am not bothered about a bit of fat gain - I just want to get big!

How strong are you? Just starting lifting? My opinion is get to 210-20 in a YEAR from your current weight. On other forums I've seen a few different guys burn out since they thought they didn't mind fat and put on too much. That is easily doable and SHOULD be done.(your goal) Eat smart and good amounts of food along with heavy, smart, consistent lifting.
Don't do what I did: I got caught up in macros for too long. We're both young so our results should be similar in the sense muscle building should be relatively easy. Do the right stuff for a year and maybe some and you'll be a satisfactory 210 or higher. Do what you want, that's just my opinion. |
