newbzlift is off to a bad start
Default Should I start out slow?

I am wanting to start lifting and I am not sure if I should just plunge into it. I do not really want to fail at it. I want to wake up feeling great and not so sore that I can not move. What is the time frame you suggest for someone who is just starting?

You should start out very light with very little strain. Use a weight that lets you finish all your sets and reps easily. Then add weight to the bar slowly over the next few weeks as your body adjusts to the workload. Over time the weights get heavier and heavier, soon you'll be lifting big weights. But give your body time to adjust.

Focus on learning the basic barbell movements - the squat, bench press, overhead press and deadlift. If its needed, start with just the bar and practice the form, this can take multiple workouts but when you feel confident you should, as OR says, start to add weight to the bar but not rushing it and breaking form. Get videos of your lifts and post them here if you have form related questions, people here are always happy to help out new brothers and sisters of the iron.

Good luck!
