They are different exercises, neither are there to replace the other, or to be added instead the other, if you know what I mean.
Military Shrugs is not an alternative for Military Presses, it's an alternative or if you want, an accessory, for example, for standard Shrugs. Ιt's obvious that they have a little bit different effect. You emphasize more on traps with the Military Shrug, and you emphasize more on delts with the Military Press. The one is a pressing exercise and the other is a shrugging exercise. You can use both in a plan, as would someone use for example both Squats and Goodmornings, where they target a bit the same muscles etc, but have a different effect, pattern etc.

Brawny that is a good analysis, however you should also factor in the efficacy of different exercises. Bench Presses generally work better for building pectoral mass than Flyes for instance; there are biological reasons for this and empirical evidence to support this.
Looking at that Press/Shrug it is quite clear to me anyway that you would not be able to load the traps to any sufficient degree, making it less productive than a regular Shrug, or Deadlifts, Rows or any number of useful trap exercises. |

I think CT explains why and for what etc, in the video. Anyway I wanted just to mention that they are different exercises etc, and Military Shrugs aren't to replace or done instead of Military Presses, because I understood that the question of the thread was about that. I hope you understand what I mean, English is not my mother language.
