lift3r is off to a bad start
Default Beginning Again

Just wondering if anyone on here has done weightlifting and then stopped? And now starting again. I am in the process of doing this. I was a heavy lifter in college, but then about five years ago I was in a serious car wreak. I had lots of trouble recovering but am doing well now. I am starting to lift again. Feels like a newbie. Any advice you can give me would be great.

I have stopped several times. Ease into things. Your strength will come back quickly as it is. No need to rush. My only advice is to enjoy the ride and take your time.

I stopped for several years to raise babies (stay at home dad) and return to college. Just wasn't any motivation to lift at that time as other things were filling in the time and energy.

The great thing about returning is you can re-visit the old beginner routines and make super rapid progress back to where you were.

I lifted hard in high school, then broke my wrist my senior year. That took me out of lifting and I didn't get back into it for a while. Then I got out of it again, then Summer before last I got back to it. Since then I've learned a ton and feel great about my training, but I REALLY wish I would have kept at it all along. Lord knows what I'd be throwing around by now.

I stopped for a while due to travel. In terms of advice I would say for the love of God, don't rush back!

I've had several extended layoffs. I usually use a week break in period where I do bodyweight exercises...push ups, chair dips...and very light barbell work.

From there I start slow but progress regularly.
