best exercises for functional strength ?
For most people what are the best exercises for functional strength ?
IMO the deadlift would have to be number 1 |
The two biggest I would go with would be the deadlift (picking heavy stuff up off the ground) and the overhead press (picking heavy stuff up over your head.)
|
For me it's squats.
One year of squatting from age 18-19 improved my vertical jump by at least 8 inches, and dramatically improved my sprint speed. I entered college a sub-par basketball player, and left college with a greatly improved game. This also helped with baseball as well. |
If I could only pick one, I would say for me, deadlifts.

Squats
I think there are far too many guys out there with a 500 lb deadlift that didn't even have to train hard for it. And in the long run it didn't improve their functionality above what they had before acheiving the lift. Show me a guy that can squat 500 lbs and I'll be looking at a guy that earned it. |
I would most definitely say deads now.
30 years ago I would have said speed hammer curls with short ROM. |

For functional strength, a good core exercise; since without a solid and stable core pretty much everything else goes to pot...no deadlift, no overhead press, no squat... |

what about the bench press ? lots of people say that its over rated but it must be great for pushing strength |
would these be the top 6 ?
squats,deads,cleans,bench,oh press, rows |
You sure won't go wrong with those.
