Q: Best exercises for functional strength?
A: Anything that involves picking heavy shit up and holding it a while or carrying it a distance.
Then putting it down.

You're core (I HATE that term) You're thoracic stabilizers ( ) get better activation and training from the lifts themselves than from crunches, hanging leg raises. etc...

Just about.

what about the bench press ? lots of people say that its over rated but it must be great for pushing strength
It's very functional for laying on your back and pushing things off of you.

For me, functional means anything that makes me strong(er), strengthens my messed up back, and keeps me out of the old folks home in the future.

Atlas stones are a help for my daily life. There's no elegant way to pick up a rock or a server box off the ground, just grab it and go.
