I think this is pretty much exactly what Glenn Pendlay said about why his athletes were gaining lots of lean mass too

II am no expert on the topic, but from my understanding it's hard to recruit maximum fibers (including IIB) if you never use heavy weight and explosive force. IIB have the greatest room for growth.
Type I fibers are always recruited first. The body will not simply recruit all muscle fibers without a reason to do so. All this fear over heavy weight and explosive lifts is a bit misguided. Now, back to my explosive barbell curls and shrugs, and my "poor" form

Basically a well rounded program will incorporate explosive movements and a certain degree of low rep training that ignores all the mind muscle, negative rep, super slo, ultra controlled, feel the pump gibberish.
I guess the muscle mass of powerlifters and Olympic lifters isn't such an enigma after all. |

Slow and controlled is good for some aspects of training. However, like Steve said, you simply must lift heavy weight to build REAL muscle.
I never get tired of watching what this man is doing in this training vid. This is serious, SFW time. Pyrros Dimas training - pyrros, dimas, weightlifting - IronScene - Powerlifting Videos |

Definitely not discounting slow and controlled. But the other side of the equation is so often discounted as unimportant by some as long as some "magic" variable such as TUT, slow negatives, rest pause, etc. are/is in place.

[quote]I think the important variable is the word slow. I'm not a big fan of ultra long rep counts. I prefer to do the rep at a natural pace. I lower the weight a bit slower at heavier weights, but I'm always looking for good speed on the opposite side of the movement.
Quote:
Progression is king, and you simply must look to push more weight for real improvement to take place. If you use a static hold as a way to increase strength, then 1 minute is your goal. Anytime you can hold a weight for 1 minute in static hold, it is time to increase the weight. beyond 1 minute and you're building endurance, not addtional strength. |

TUT is a solid variable when assessing whether you are getting enough reps in, but it is a by-product, and not a prime product.
