I'll move it to the "not serious" pile ASAP.
![]() Pinwheels were pretty popular here last year. We had a string where everyone was trying them. Not so much lately though.

EDIT: to clarify, I've only started standing alternating DB curls recently, by comparison. I used to sit and do 1 arm at a time. If what I'm doing is less productive, I will return to the seated and/or isolated curling I was doing... I want to get this right. I only started standing alternating because I felt my increase in stamina demanded it! Last edited by Abaddon; 02-07-2011 at 08:56 AM. |

I am a big fan of alternating curls. That's really the only way I do dumbbells. I never cared for both arms at the same time. I have performed seated and standing curls. Whatever feels good for you.

So everyone is accepting your curls as a functional strength exercise? Fair enough, the core and back are working in conjunction with the bis. Bottom line tho, there are much more effective ways to train for athletic strength. Recklessly curling dumbells IMO isnt the answer. |

repped, btw. I cannot say that I am training for 'athletic strength' per se: I am not sure what I AM training for, tbh... other than mass and power (functional strength) and generally making the most of my genetic gifts. Last edited by Abaddon; 02-07-2011 at 11:23 AM. |

In regard to the 'curls' - If athletic/functional strength is your goal, time is better spent doing the following movements: Upperbody cable flyes external internal rotation(top and bottom) cable lateral pulldowns diagonal pulldowns pull ups along with the standard: bench press military press push press cleans Lowerbody side lunges plie lunges cable attached leg moves. abduction/aduction rotation front/back lunges along with the standard: d/l clean squat squat variation Abs/core hanging leg lifts wood chops swiss ball curls If the above is or becomes your goal, emphasis with weight the areas of your body that can put most muscle into action. If bodybuilding is your goal, those 'curls' are only removing tension from the bis. |

What you are implying (or maybe I'm simply inferring) is that my curls are not sufficiently isolating the biceps? I could perhaps utilise this loading (or slightly less, given my form in the vid) but in a seated position, to reduce the 'throwing' of the dumbbell? Don't get me wrong ILL, I like the depth you went to with the list of exercises that assist with athletic strength. But, on inspection, I think I have most of them covered with my present 4 dayer. |

Seems as though were on the same page ab. I was also shocked to read these very very experienced and knowledgeable fellows on this site approve of your vid. Id like to know if their approval was in regard to muscle building. And if the approval was for strength, id like to know what exercise these 'curls' will assist or improve. |
