Diet is very important in cutting down. Your w/o is just as important to. Both are very important in keeping your size. In bulking up w/o to tear down the fibers and nutrition (diet) to have the nutrients to make the repairs and grow. So basically, in both. They both go hand and hand. You can't have a winning race car by having supper good wheels and a in-line 4 engine or a V-12 engine, great tires and a crappy transmission. Your body is a machine (literally). You want the best details from every angle and all angles are important. Knowing your body and how it reacts is the first step in accomplishing having th best. Then comes the fuel to get it to make changes, tweaking w/o's to what triggers your body to grow. Once you have this info its time to grow. Its up to you to use th info and be dedicated to it. You need to make decisions every day on what you want more. To be the best or is this 1 day or changing worth giving it up?

I would say both are equally important. In my opinion diet counts for 45% of your gains, training another 45% and the remaining 10% comes from more minor factors such as sleep, rest supplements etc.
