To gain muscle you have to eat big and lift big. To lose and keep muscle you have to eat less and lift big. I personally find the latter a lot harder to manage.
This exactly ^^

A great diet with poor training yields nothing.
A great diet with great training yields great results.
An average diet (by bodybuilding standards) with great training yields very good results. (As long as the calories and protein are there)

I have never needed some super-clean, ultra micro-managed eating plan to gain. I just made sure I ate enough and got in my protein. I haven't counted any macros in 24 years.

Now before one of the snappy young chaps chimes in with some "Hey dude you're old and weigh 250, and I am young and ripped", I will remind them that I was under 200 for most of my life and used by un-OCD approach.

Just to clarify the Cutler video, he was talking about a cutting diet and getting into "tip top condition" as Jay put it.
