Surgery

Surgery is low risk.
Anxiety attack.
My inter-vertebral disc,
A jelly-filled sac,
An integral component
Of my low-back,
Like a squished jelly donut,
Keeps my body on the rack.

They need to incise
Then peel back my skin.
With tools microscopically precise
They値l shave bone to get in.
A little bit of tissue slicing,
Before the sutures, some wound irrigation
Then, next day, I値l be home icing
The site to minimize irritation.

With a window of one inch width
Doc must know his surgery
I知 not an ingot for a blacksmith
And this is not metallurgy.
I can稚 be melted down
Then re-forged or re-used.
A mistake condemns me to a hospital gown
Or to having my vertebra fused.

They need to take a piece of me,
A piece I致e always had,
But if it brings bodily peace to me
I think I will be glad.

I have never read an Ode to Back Surgery before. Must admit, it is pretty good.

I had a lamonectomy and discectomy in 1996. I didn't start lifting until 2009. I started with Squats, Deads and Good Mornings. I confess I do rack deads mostly, I train alone, at home and do not own the floor I would be dropping the bar on. However, I feel I just have not trained unless I have done some squats or deads. BTW, reached my 2010 goal of 1.5 x BW for my rack deads last week. I am almost there with my squats. This despite a back surgery and 2 hernia repairs.

I totally agree. I don't deny getting frustrated at my speed of growth, but then when I look back and see what I have done in a short amount of time, I am amazed. My back feels better now, after squatting and deads, than it did the previous ten years before. That is not to say I don't have to be careful. I messed myself up this summer swinging a golf club. Took about 8 weeks to get over, but I am now squatting heavier than I was before I the incident. I have tried to focus on my form and patience. My current philosophy is, "One pound more or one rep more." Micro loading has helped immensely.

My advise to those with the, "I don't want to hurt my back," mentality. Start slow, be patient and each session add one more pound or one more rep. Your body will thank you.

I can honestly say that I feel my lower back is much stronger than the average guy my age and I can only attribute that to lifting.
