There are two smith machines where I lift. One is upstairs with a straight bar path and the other is downstairs with an angled bar path and a counter balanced bar (weighs almost nothing). Good places to stretch out the lats though. I do think they would be good substitutes for training for say a car squat or front bar car deadlift. Really any type of squat or deadlift that's lever based with a bar handle as well. May have to modify it with some band tension to get the feeling of the weight changing throughout the lift.
