It's been said by many a strength coaches and I've seen it myself in my limited time at a gym that more people are injured by bench presses than by squats or deadlifts IF PERFORMED CORRECTLY. But no one ever seems to avoid the bench press especially at commercial gyms. When performed with correct form deadlifts and squats are some of the safest exercises you can perform. |

That's the hard part for the average Joe - he never seeks out proper form. And you won't find proper form discussions in Ronnie Coleman's latest book...

Proper form is the one that keeps you injury free and lifts the most poundage. Just have a good idea what you are doing and don't blame me if you get hurt. You want to lift insane weight, you need to be insane...just not stupid. Always warm up properly and eliminate fear from your head. Fear = doubt= bad form = injury

How about this one "Don't be a pussy it's supposed to hurt"
Beginner usually don't know good pain from bad. Most times this is because they do not know what it feels like to actually hit the muscle or muscle group they are trying to. If it hurts stop. Try stretching, a lighter weight, or just skipping that exercise or body part for a workout. If you push thru an injury it will not go away. Trust me I know this and deal with it every day of the week. |

Squats are bad for your knees and deadlifts are bad for your back.

Bad advice: Anything a pencil neck trainer tells you. Anyone who doesn't look the part or have years of experience should probably not be your source of information.
Good advice: Don't turn your cardio training into a Long Distance Running Fest. If you want to get jacked and stay lean, run some hills, push the prowler, sprint, circuits, tabata, etc. If your back hurts deadlifting, it is probably because your back, hamstrings and glutes are weak and not functioning properly. Don't neglect these muscle groups or you will set yourself up for failure. Last edited by ehubbard; 03-23-2010 at 07:31 AM. |
