I think it's all valid. Doing the same thing all the time isn't going to work for most people. Pushing yourself as hard as possible with intenisities from 60-95% in a consistent, monitored, progressive manner will make you stronger, and eating a lot while you do it will make you bigger.

Bam. Done.

You know if Layne is so steadfast about HIT being not the best method scientifically.

He should make the "Scientific" athlete. Find some competitors and implement whatever science proves to be the best...... and See if they end up looking better than Dorian or other HIT guys.
