I've never let a little cold stop me from training. In fact, I always found taht it took my mind off of it and made me feel much better.

I am of the opinion that it depends on symptoms and severity.
Generally speaking, if it is in my lungs, I have a fever or I have been sick to my stomach I do not work out. If I feel a little under the weather and I have a little sinus congestion I will work out. Often times under these conditions I feel better after a training session. These are general guidlines, but this is not a black and white issue. You have feel it out for yourself.

id never say this to a client, but i go to the gym unless i am physically incapable of getting out of bed

Depends on how you feel. If you have a fever then the answer is no. If you have just a cold with no temp, then I would say go for it. But like BigJosh said if it is in your lungs, then by all means stay home and wait for the gym. It is not worth it to turn into something much worse.

If I feel really achy and just generally crappy then I do not go. A sore throat would not keep me out of the gym, but a fever or achyness would.
