I would like to work out with a partner but i am not sure what I should look for in one. What are some tips to find a great partner that will benefit my lifting?

I've worked out with a lot of different training partners over the years, and have trained through their ups and downs as well. The common element in a good training partner, is the desire to give their all in the gym. I've trained with all sorts of training partners, some who were into bodybuilding, some powerlifting, some knew absolutely nothing, some knew more than me, some weaker, some stronger but really what makes it work is just that desire to do well. You don't want someone who's head isn't there, it's demotivating and just plain dangerous from a safety point of view.

So yeah, whoever it is, just make sure they're positive, they want to be there and they're willing to work. The rest isn't as important in my opinion.

Understanding - of goals and concepts as well as mechanics of a lift.

Communication - absolute understanding between both partners about lift-offs etc and when to step in or not as the case may be.

Focus - you don't want someone whose head is not there, especially in the middle of a lift going haywire on you.

Friendship - you need to be able to get along.

Someone who knows what they are doing. And like Fazc says, make sure that they have a good attitude.

Partners come and go. Enjoy them while they are there, it's great to have a buddy to work out with on a regular basis. However, don't rely on them for you consistency or motivation. You have to be self driven and self disciplined. I've seen to many lose there motivation or stop working out because there partner doesn't call them anymore to work out or there partner doesn't work out anymore.

I am not a powerlifter nor am I a bodybuilder. I just want to be big and strong.

Make sure they know what they are doing. I once worked out with a guy who claimed to know it all and really hardly knew a thing.
