The OP posted a pic of Tom Hardy in 'Warrior'. Hardy as Bane in 'The Dark Knight Returns' looked flabby and mediocre.

He was apparently also on steroids, as evidenced by the bacne:

This is what Bane is supposed to look like:

Yeah, because that would make sense in Nolan's universe.

If I were training purely for size I would do deadlifts, rows, power shrugs, pullup variation, more rows, and maybe a clean or high pull variation.

I detect a hint of sarcasm. My brother made the same argument recently. I don't care who's "universe" it is. When I watch a superhero movie, I want the superheroes and supervillains to be larger than life, and look the way they're supposed to look. Anyway, this trilogy, and especially this final movie, was inspired by 'The Dark Knight Returns' comic series by Frank Miller.

This is Miller's Batman:

He's clearly much more jacked than Hardy as Bane in Nolan's movie, and Bane is supposed to look both bigger and leaner than Brock Lesnar, for example. I was definitely disappointed with Hardy's physique in TDKR.

This is Bane in the main Batman comic universe:

The difference between power shrugs and the standard shrugs is that you use your legs to help with the power shrugs right ?

Big Miller fan. As I enter comic movies, I always return to the character bios. While Miller drew Batman as a ~250 pound man, DC's Who's Who lists him as 6'2" and 210.

In some instances, the comics will alter the appearance of a star after a successful movie. Marvel did this with Wolverine after X-Men, having artists draw him as taller (which I thought was a mistake). This has since been rectified.

Yes, he is in the comics. But in the visual sense of a movie, all Bane needs to be is bigger than Batman. Which he was. And I don't agree that he looked sloppy. He looked big and strong. Hardy's look from Warrior (more lean) would not have worked next to Bale in TDKR.

The contrast between the actors has to be considered. This is what we get in Avengers. In the comics, Thor is about 6'6" and 640. So, they cast Hemsworth, who is 6"2" and who, by default, towers over everyone except Evans (who plays Cap). It maintains the visual just enough to work.

I'm not sure that there is an actor on the planet you can truly act who also had a body like Brock Lesnar and Nolan is not a fan of CGI. So, within that, I thought Hardy did an excellent job.

With all due respect -- this is delicious, not flabby and mediocre..... at least in my opinion.........
