I think the 5 X 5 system can be very tough and very taxing for the older trainer.

Drop it to twice a week. I'll bet things keep progressing nicely and you'll be more recovered. Try the simple things first

Throwing this out there as a possible option..

Drop deadlifts to only Wednesday, squat on Monday and Friday, alternate days between bench and overhead press instead of doing both each day. Fill in accessory work after that point.

Agreed steve...but knowing what % of his 1rm he ramps up to could explain a little. If he is just adding 5 lbs per week but staying around 50% of his 1rm 3 times a week benching would not be as taxing as ramping up to 85-90% of your 1rm 3 times per week.

For instance monday could be bench focus day and you ramp to 85%. Then on wed and fri you just ramp it to 50%.

Wednesday could be DL focus and ramp to 85% with monday and fri only 50%.

Friday squat focus....

Just thinking if he is hitting each lift too extreme everyday recovery could really suffer.

I have entertained the idea of a two day rest after each workout, my workout days would be rotating. Not really an issue for me.

That's probably the easiest first route to take and then once you feel energised again you may want to consider trying a different rotation, as suggested above, and put another day in and see how the body responds; if it responds badly, then drop it to two days and maintain a 2-day set-up.

Tweak and tweak some more until you hit the set-up that suits you.
