My advice to the average gym rat who will never compete is this...lift about 60-75 minutes, 3-4 days per week. Do this and the likeliness of you overtraining is virtually nil, no matter how dysfunctional the program.

Progress is the main factor to look out for. If progress isn't occurring regularly I would firstly check your diet and rest/sleep factors are in check. If you can genuinely say those are taken care of then, it's generally due to either a lack of work or too much work. In either case a re-evaluation of the routine is in order. |

Yep, as above; and from what I read, overtraining symptoms are very easy to discern because people are generally exhausted on a daily basis, have little will to train, lose their appetite etc.
