Default Shock workouts for muscle building

I see shock workout tossed around. Are shock workouts a valid practice, and if so how do you feel someone should shock a muscle?

I believe in them, although probably not for the same reason all the bodybuilders do. I believe bodybuilders use "shock" workouts to spur further growth. I like shock workouts so that my routine doesn't become stagnant. I stick to a pretty basic routine for years at a time and it can get a little hum-drum after months of doing the same stuff, but I know that's what it takes to get good at it. So to combat that I throw in some shock workouts once in a while. One of my favorite shock workouts is a 50 rep squat (ala Dr. Ken) or some odd finisher like farmers walks or sandbag lifts. Try something unexpected to spice things up, it helps combat the ADD routine changing that we all fight with.

I'm a Competitive bodybuilder and I'm with Off Road on using them to keep things fresh and in perspective.

Every workout should shock the body, thats what triggers the growth to compensate for the work getting done.

Just another fancy word for "changing it up to keep things freash" .


But I'm no "Guru" so again just something that is just my personal opinion.

Every now and then I like doing something crazy, like a 10x10, or max deadlift reps in 60 minutes. One time I did 100 sumo deadlift reps in 30 minutes. It was fun in a sick way.

When I do something like this though I make sure my eating matches my foolishness.

I like to do a brutal leg session now and then, one of those sessions that midway through, you wish you never started to lift in the first place. Often alot of supersets or trisets, squat or legpress for time etc.
