Why Bodybuilders Need to Get Strong
In the early days of pro bodybuilding, competitors were as strong as they looked. Reg Park, who won the NABBA Mr. Universe title in 1951, had legitimate 20-inch arms and was the first bodybuilder to bench press 500 pounds. Bill Pearl, who won the 1953 NABBA Mr. Universe title, could do a seated press behind-the-neck with 310 pounds, military press 320, bench press 450, front squat 500 and back squat 605. Bruce Randall, who won the 1959 NABBA Mr. Universe title, had these best lifts: a 770-pound deadlift, a 228-pound biceps curl, and a dumbbell bench press with 220 pounds for 2 reps. And Franco Columbu, an IFBB Mr. Olympia in 1976 and 1981, reportedly at 185 pounds bodyweight deadlifted 780 pounds – a lift that exceeded the amateur world record at the time. Zatsiorsky told us why these early pro bodybuilders were so strong.

Zatsiorsky explained that muscle hypertrophy is caused by sarcoplasmic hypertrophy andmyofibrillar hypertrophy. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy involves the increase of a gel like component called sarcoplasm within muscle cells that does not contribute to muscle force. By focusing on higher reps (and thus lower-intensity weights), a bodybuilder develops large increases in muscle size but only minimal increases in muscle strength. In contrast, myofibrillar hypertrophy is an increase in the basic unit of a muscle called the myofibril that does contribute to muscle force. By focusing on lower reps (and thus higher-intensity weights), a weightlifter can significantly increase muscle size. As such, Zatsiorsky supports the idea that to develop maximum muscle size, a bodybuilder needs to perform both higher reps and lower reps, as was often the case with the early bodybuilders.
