I am Caleb, 32 years old, and a firefighter / EMT. I've been in the emergency services for almost 9 years and during those 9 years I have let myself go physically. Currently 5'9" 212 lbs, 30% body fat, and get winded after climbing two flights of stairs in full turnout gear.
Recently came across an article that stated the average collected pension for a retired firefighter was one year. Simply put, after a year of retirement the common death was heart attack. Since starting my new position with the Army as a civilian firefighter, I have 20 years until retirement and wish to enjoy all the time and effort I will put towards it. I have never been one for the gym. I usually got my exercise through martial arts (Taekwondo for 8 yrs, Karate, Akido and MMA for a while). I'm much more comfortable with a punching bag than a squat rack. While I haven't found a place to train since I moved to Maryland, I am resolved in the fact I need to get fit. I'm getting into the gym everyday (work even provides 1.5 hours to do so) and starting to lift and even do cardio (as much as I hate running, elliptical machines, and the like). My goal is to lose 50 pounds weight, least half the body fat, and increase my cardio by December of 2012. And this time, keep training and not slump into old habits. Joined the site to help learn the proper techniques, some workouts, and maybe some accountability for reaching my goal. |
