Get hoodge.
Seriously though, eat plenty and lift heavy and your metabolism will improve. Eat very little and do grueling endurance work and it will slow. Over simplified, but its the basic idea.

Just keep in mind a negative calorie balance is required to lose fat. If you are trying to "speed up your metabolism" for fat loss you are probably taking the wrong approach. Try a reasonable calorie deficit with resistance training and some cardio and you'll get leaner. |

Muscle is basically metabolism.
Increase muscle, increase metabolism. Increase activity, increase metabolism. Metabolism by definition is the rate your body expands energy. The more muscle and the higher the activity, the higher demand for energy; the faster the metabolism.

All great posts. Its all about Cals in and cals needed to run your body.
Car analogy here. You build up your engine it burns more gas and your tank empties sooner. You keep the engine the same you have to drive the car and run the engine more to burn the same gas out. Gas is your cals, the engine is your body. The burning up of gas is your using up your cals and fat stored energy. As a general person things like caffeine that speed up your metab should only be used if you are at a plato and for a jump start.

Another way I have heard it put, is that if you are not active and you are using things like red bull or caffeine just to burn more calories while doing nothing, it is like like revving the motor to an engine up while in neutral. Your heart is doing all kinds of work for limited activity. Great post.

A person's metabolism speeds up when they eat and when they move...so, in a nutshell, stay active
not forgetting that certain medical conditions can interfere with metabolism even for those that have and are still remaining active, just highlighting that fact, although many do not fall into that category, some do. If a person has been active and at a stable bodyweight for a long time and suddenly starts gaining weight, not having altered either diet or exercise, then it's time to get the thyroid and the body in general checked out.
