Would 30 for example, be 30 Right arm and 30 Left, or 15 Right/15 Left? Same goes for shoulder press machines, seated row machines (not rowers). I still have to check with the gym whether the machines are lbs or kgs but I think it may be the former, possibly.

Thanks LtL, I was assuming the same thing but it dawned on me that maybe it wasn't. It sounds more feasible though.

If its a single stack machine, I would assume that its 30 combined. And I think that's a pretty safe assumption.

Babs, also keep in mind that the number it displays is JUST A NUMBER. The perceived resistance for a given number will vary from machine to machine. What one machine says is 30lbs may feel harder or easier than another machine that says 30lbs. These numbers are immaterial in a vacuum or when compared to numbers on a different machine. The only way of comparing these numbers is when comparing the resistance level you lifted at a previous date on the same machine.

I think, at the induction, it was set at 30 or 40, and the trainer was just about to suggest I might like to lower the load when I pressed it; but it wasn't heavy...whereas, the lat pulldown, I took down to 20 (lbs ??) because above that was too heavy to pull with full ROM. Next time I'm there, I'll ask one of the trainers what system the machines are based on. He did mention the difference over two similar machines which I understood, having come across it on the forums before; these forums really help a lot. I could happily go by block numbers, it wouldn't really bother me much.

Don't use machines!
They lead to imbalances by eliminating the activation of stabilizers which leads to disfunction, which leads to injury. In the immortal words of Coach Dan John "Machines are for the infirmed."

I found out the stacks are in kgs, hubby asked the doc today since she used to frequent the gym here.

I forgot to update this; after talking with the trainer yesterday, the stacks are most definitely in kgs and the weightload is a combined (2-arm) load.
I was disappointed to find out that he had no idea what the wooden bumper plates weighed, nor any solid clue as to what the barbell spring clips weighed. He mentioned the spring clips would weigh about 1kg but after doing some research they may weigh as much as 2.5kg each; the wooden bumper plates, he put at around another 1kg, yet online it also states that they can weigh around 5kg a pair, wooden. Whilst that may not seem an issue, it is; if I use 2 wooden bumper plates (to bring the height up) and 2 spring locks, that's 10kg that I will not have accounted for, or will end up wrongly unaccounting for. At least at home, I know exactly what is what, thankfully. But at the gym, I may end up having to go by different weightloads since I can't account for certain items, with the deadlift for example. Oh well, we'll see, this week hopefully.
