Default Calf raises with the Smith Machine...

...good option?

The fitness zone has no calf raise machines, no hack squat machine etc...so, since it's a place where I can, in theory, use more weight for calf raises than I can at home, and I've seen them done in a mag using the Smith Machine and a step; does that seem a wise option.

I think it's a good option.

Have you ever tried one legged calf raises holding a dumbbell?

Yep, tried those, and tried holding a heavy barbell in front (because I've not yet used really heavy weights for back squats) and they just have no effect...it could be because my calves are pretty solid already, not really sure.

I've seen it done in my gym. Haven't tried it myself, but might someday. We used to have a standing calf raise station, but they took it outbecause it was always broken. I think it would be a good option.

I do them that way twice a week. First day heavy, second day light.

Definitely a good idea. Just make sure you get a good stretch at the bottom and don't bounce. There's a guy at my gym who does tons of calf stuff, and with lots of weight, but just bounces up and down like a clown.

His calves are still small.

I used to do them with my cheap little smith/pully/pecdec machine.
They are definitely a good option - holding the bar in either a back squat or behind the back position.

If they have a board, I may do that, since there will be less chance of slipping from a higher platform; I would say weight plates, but I think it's the sort of place that won't permit that
