Progression drives the bus.

Crom smiles upon you for passing along the magic!

I'm always astounded at how many people I see in the gym just wandering around with no obvious routine, seemingly picking exercises on a whim (more often than not these exercises are chest/biceps focused) and NOT TRACKING THEIR WEIGHTS! If you don't know what you did last time, how the hell are you going to beat it next time?! I now have almost 3 years of training logs and they are extremely useful. I can track the progression of my deadlift from its origin to the present day and see how far I've come. Who wouldn't want to enjoy that kind of achievement?

Hmm.. You're expecting inexperienced lifters to understand that lifting takes experience. Perhaps that's a fail from the get go.

I didn't know jack from the get go, but I read and learned, tried my own methods, got feedback from that, etc. Journals are of course beneficial, but then again, did you have one when you started? Let's see it.

Lifting is a tough business, it takes time and overcoming a certain amount of inherent stupidity. Cut some slack to idiots and potential powerlifting monsters alike.

5kg said it. Just get in there and lift. But, then again, that's tough if your mind is tangled up in reps and sets. There's a lot of foolishness out there. Who's to say this 5-3-1 is better that one, etc?

Just .02 in sympathy of the poorly educated.
