Any lift is only as good as your weakest link.

I read that the upper abs are used in most movements, every time we bend to pick something up so deadlifts and similar moves would work the upper abs well. I also read, whether or not there's anything in it, I don't know, that isometric abs work is better for strengthening the abs for heavy lifts...like I said though, I have no idea if that makes any sense.

I fully agree with the first part, the upper abs are made use of a lot, it's the lower abs that aren't really taxed; it probably also accounts for why the upper abs tend to be prominent on most people and why they struggle with the lower abs definition and size.

I feel weighted situps strongly in my lower abs, for what it's worth.

That's probably an ignorant comment, but as I've stated, I have never been an ab guy.

I have one exercise which really hits the lower abs but which is not easy to describe, no weight loads involved though.

My gym has that ab coaster machine (Which you can load with plates). I have never gotten more burn in my lower abdominal area than when I used it for a few months last year.

I also do ab wheels, mostly on my knees, doing them standing hurts my shoulders too much.

I sit most of the day as well. Have you thought about investing in a more ergonomic chair (if you will be sitting a lot for months and years to come)?

It's helped me to the point where my back on hurts from sitting when I am sitting for long periods of time at home.

Depending on what sort of chair you're sitting in, try a sturdy style cushion placed in the lower back area; I used to have back ache from doing study at the computer until I struck on using a cushion to replicate the expensive chairs, worked a charm.

I hear that. I wouldn't have one at work, except that they make those allowances here and there.
