It could also be a form issue. Are you pushing your knees out as you squat down? Squats are all about sequencing. First, the butt starts to go back, then as you continue to sit back the knees push out and bend to allow the butt to move downward. If the knees don't go out, then there's no room for your stomach to go between your legs, which forces you to bow your lower back to continue to lower the weight.

Next time I squat, Thursday, I will film my form from different angles and post it on the forums for criticism. That way maybe I spot or someone spots any problems with my form.

i have my doubts about butt "winking" even being an issue. i think it's a case of people noticing "something" and they feel the need to comment on it. and of course, if it's different from what they do, then it must be wrong i'm flexible enough to where i always touch hamstrings to glutes in squats; i'm pretty sure my hips do the "wink." but guess what? so does this guy's:

the "no no no no" means no belt, straps, knee wraps, and i forget what else. if you read the comments section, he responds to accusations of "butt winking."

i think there is a chance of hurting your back coming out of the "wink" b/c i think the load quickly transfers to your lower back immediately out of the hole (that is, when you squat all the way down). you can avoid this by consciously tightening your glutes throughout the entire squat. i've found that doing so helps protect my lower back going in and out of the hole, and the "wink" doesn't affect my lift at all.

but definitely listen to Fazc, and i hope Fazc will set me straight if i've said anything ignorant.

That would be a good idea. I know that I've spent a ton of time on my form, trying to find something that lets me move the most weight while also keeping me from having any pain. As for the butt wink, I do think it's ok, especially for olympic lifters like the one if the video Secondsout posted. I consider myself a powerlifter, so I like to go right to parallel. If anyone's butt winks at or above parallel, then it's an indicator of either a mobility issue, a form issue, or some combination thereof. If you prefer to go super deep in your squats, then a butt wink is almost inevitable.

Good post Secondsout.

Yep.

In my own personal experience the style of squatting that has your push your hips out prior to descending also promotes more of a butt wink. Ironic since the fella who popularised that, also apparently popularised the term butt wink.
