Basic physiology: hicups, by definition, are caused by a twitch in the diaphragm...omit the twitch in the diaphragm and hey presto, hiccups gone. I wish I could explain over the internet...but consider slowing the movement of the diaphragm...holding it "taut" whilst slowly expelling air which permits it to move extremely slowly and under some pressure, since you're resisting the movement of the diaphragm as you ever so slowly expel air; take a deep breath, then start the very slow process, hiccups should be gone by the end.
That help? Gets rid of hccups in double quick time. I read up on hiccups, realised it was basically a twitch and went about eliminating the twitch

That only alters the ratio of O2 to CO2 and whilst helpful for asthmatics and such, it won't do a thing for hiccups.
