I have a very bad back (2 herniated discs and one bulging disc). My doctor and PT are against heat on a back bad. Instead, they insist on cold only.
I have those flat, rectangular cooler packs for lunches. I strap those to my back with an adjustable back-brace I inherited. Works well and is infinitely cheaper in the long run. Also, the Thera Cold pad looks to be $19.99 on WalMart.com.

I have a pack that you can heat up or stick in the freezer. Got mine several years ago from LTD. I have used it so many times and it works great. I would look else where though and see about getting it cheaper. I believe mine was under $10.

Cold only for your back!! 20 minutes on 1 hour off.
Any kind of cold pack will work, if you need to keep it in place I found the ace bandage used as a wrap works well!

My wife got a gift from one of her students several years ago that was filled with rice. Just a towel that was sewed with rice in it. You can either heat it or place in the freezer. This would be a much cheaper option for you.
