But my mom didn't milk it. She got off and found a job because she believed it was the right thing to do. She wanted to free up that money for another mother that might be in need. Responsible citizenship.

In addition, younger individuals are generally more reliant on help and older individuals are generally more self-reliant. This is the way of life. We move from having mom and dad helping us learn to solve problems, to having to teach problem solving to the baby birds.

Also, youth thinks it will live forever and dances on the wilder side. It has not learned as many hard lessons, therefore it is inherently more liberal.

Responsibility also leans older folks towards a more conservative approach. We have lost jobs, friends, family members to death, etc. We know that hard times are only a day away, so we keep a tighter belt. We also statistically have more on the line...homes, children, savings plans, etc.

Saying youth is more liberal, and less educated isn't an insult. From a statistical standpoint, younger people are more liberal and less educated. They have had less time on earth to learn and experience.

This is not meant as an insult, or from a perspective of superiority. Politics aside, which this really isn't about for me, this is just the way of life.
you and I both as children basically survived with assistance from the government. both of our mothers, by the sound of it, used it well and responsibly.

should the system be eliminated because some abuse it? should it be eliminated when it doesn't touch closely to our own lives?

Who's talking eliminating anything? Reduction of waste doesn't equal elimination.

Setting this aside, I simply do not believe the government is efficient in any manner at solving problems. If you do, then we will never agree. I believe our society needs to encourage people to get off their butts and solve their own problems, and to do the right thing. This isn't being cruel. As a parent, this is called raising a responsible child.

This does not mean I believe all assistance should be shut off. Of course not. We just need to reward right behavior more than we do slacking behavior.

I'm bowing out of these threads because I genuinely enjoy the training philosophy at this site and want to continue to do so. I walked into the wolves den waving meat around.

True, but in America liberal lifestyles and youth tend to vote liberal, and conservative lifestyles and age tend to vote conservative.

I live a conservative lifestyle but want more of a wild west freedom than the young liberals who are blowing bongs and wearing thongs. Many tend to say they are for more freedom, but they vote for bigger government because they are aligned with other policies of the liberal party.

Anyway, I dislike the major parties. Leave me alone, all you bastards. I put people above politics, and politics has less meaning to me as I age. I just want more freedom and for government to get their nose out of my business.

And for me, I'd say the exact opposite. I started off in my teens as politically conservative. My life experiences and eduucational journey have moved me in the opposite direction, and I now regard my inital position as very naive.

I have absolutely no statistics on this, but my personal experience is that I see a general inverse correlation between level of education and conservatism. The PhDs and graduates I know are mostly left leaning, those with high school education are genrally a bit conservative. The exception is IT and engineering graduates - they're nearly all conservative, for some reason (cos they don't really understand human beings )

As in your post, no insult intended, that's just my observations, which are no doubt biased by what I want to see.

For myself, my belief about politics really follow from having a science and philosophy background. Once I'd really thought through the implications of my academic beliefs, conservatism wasn't really tenable for me.

Yeah, I mean this is related to what I'm saying. From my 10 years on mostly american forums, I've noticed that 'being conservative' is a much more loaded statement in the US than it is in the UK.

Hear hear. Not nearly as much difference in the political parties these days anyway.

You can consider yourelf conservative and still not claim allegance to a political party. The same goes for liberals too I suppose.

Absolutely. 'Liberal' too. On American forums, it's 'light the blue touchpaper and retire to a safe distance'.

I thought that until the Tories came back in, now I think they really are radically Tory, in an undiluted Maggie Thatcher sort of way. But then as I work in the public sector, I would think that .
