Do you mean that all of those factors push you in the direction of being more conservative? If so, I'd dispute the first one.

Actually, thinking about it, I'd dispute all three.

I'm not surprised with the thrust of the Telegraph article - it all ties in with many lifters' belief systems about themselves, the so-called 'fundamental attribution error', their beliefs about progress and so on.

National culture has a huge influence, though. The UK Sugden site, which I follow, is politically diverse, but there's a surpirisingly strong left-leaning element. Every US based site I've been on is predominantly politically conservative (by UK standards).

Conservative. Equal rights. Not for hurting people, just want to be left alone for the most part when it comes to government. Stay out of my food, my religion, my sex life, etc. Taxes are necessary, don't like paying them, but no choice. I just would like to see something better than giving my money to people who aren't working.

It also makes sense that the worse-off in life you are, the more you want help from a bigger government. This is not an insult, but rather a reality. I grew up in a poor home. We took government help. My dad left us high and dry.

But my mom didn't milk it. She got off and found a job because she believed it was the right thing to do. She wanted to free up that money for another mother that might be in need. Responsible citizenship.

In addition, younger individuals are generally more reliant on help and older individuals are generally more self-reliant. This is the way of life. We move from having mom and dad helping us learn to solve problems, to having to teach problem solving to the baby birds.

Also, youth thinks it will live forever and dances on the wilder side. It has not learned as many hard lessons, therefore it is inherently more liberal.

Responsibility also leans older folks towards a more conservative approach. We have lost jobs, friends, family members to death, etc. We know that hard times are only a day away, so we keep a tighter belt. We also statistically have more on the line...homes, children, savings plans, etc.

Saying youth is more liberal, and less educated isn't an insult. From a statistical standpoint, younger people are more liberal and less educated. They have had less time on earth to learn and experience.

This is not meant as an insult, or from a perspective of superiority. Politics aside, which this really isn't about for me, this is just the way of life.
