Two, compared to what some of them will do for money, this isn't too bad. Third, lets be honest. I'm not sure how much money is in it for them, but I'd let Gandhi slap me in the face with a halibut on camera for $20k.

Barbells and plates and racks are the cheapest part of a gym. Treadmills with heart rate monitors and the like cost $12,000. A life fitness shoulder press machine costs $4,500. You can set up a platform, power rack, barbell and 200kg of bumper plates for about $3,000 wholesale. By comparison, centres I've worked at have paid $3,000 a day to heat their outdoor swimming pools, and $2,500 a week to have at least one staff member on through the 100 hours of opening. In any gym, equipment and its maintenance are the smallest expense overall. Free weights are the smallest part of that small part.

They have managed to get a fair share of the most dedicated individuals, most of whom they do not want in the gym, to promote their business to less dedicated family and friends via Facebook, etc.
My family wouldn't members wouldn't have remembered Planet Fitness if it weren't for me posting these on my wall, drawing attention to them. Brilliant marketing strategy. Despite how much they are hated, everyone's talking about them.

![]() I've also mentioned, on here I think, about the rack area flooring which is a soft rubber and tends to sink slightly underfoot, certainly not something I feel overly safe on and find it much easier to do an overhead press at home than on their specialised flooring; in a way, I'm pleased I can workout at home, Oly lifts and all

I see PF as this.. if you want to get in shape, be in a general overall good level of health and fitness without really "getting crazy and bulking up", PF is for you. If you want to be remotely stronger than general fitness, PF is not for you. If you have a routine for lifitng, PF is not for you. If you like to lift alone, and get upset with only yourself when you fail, in a spate of more aggressive determiniation to acheive and succeed, PF is not for you. If you want to just lift iron and be a bigger person, PF is not for you.
But remember, once a month PF will give away free pizzas and bagels to those who join. How aggravating would it be to someone who is solid in their everything for training, to walk in to the gym, and just smell pizza? I bet 50% of the new customers are actually multiple time return customers who came in, got free pizza, tried to workout after eating pizza, then said working out was too tough..only to keep trying and failing. I see some fairly in-shape people walking in to my local PF, but most of the are just general fitness geeks, or the few that look big and cut, fall under the Manlet category and couldn't imagine lifting half of what sme of us do here, ever. PF can eat my ass. I so want to walk in to PF centers and try to get kicked out multiple times, all while making fun of the "go-getters" and pizza eaters. Albeit, I'm in crap shape myself due to injury but still.. it would be fun to laugh at some of them, even if it's mean, unwarranted, and might make someone cry. Getting in shape/ being stronger makes me cry.. and I so long to have those tears of strength rolling down my face again.
