I'm considering buying one of these for the wife for xmas, but I don't know much about them. Do they offer free books that you can download, or do you have to purchase all of them?

I dont have a Nook, but I do have a Kindle and a tablet running Android. The non-color Kindle is much easier to read than any tablet that has an LCD display. I find myself not able to focus on the LCD screen, whereas the grey and black screen on the Kindle is much closer to reading a book or newspaper. Having said that a tablet offers a world of other functionality that a Kindle ereader does not (games, media, intewebz, etc.).
