I think my bench numbers are slightly higher than my rows but that could be in part due to the medical condition. Then again, there's not a whole lot of difference between the two; and I haven't done either for quite a while now

Just as every one said there are alot of variables that need to be taken in consideration. Just to give you an idea
BB rows Strict form:225-250ish for sets of 8-10 BB rows with Momentum: 275-315 for sets of 3-5 Havent done Pendlay in a while but I have been as high as 330s when I was at a heavier BW.

Besides how a person rows one must also consider how the row is trained when looking at some type of comparison (1, 2, 3, etc. rep max). For most in the strength game, the row takes an assistance role which means higher volumes with light(er) weight. With that in mind, I see more developed lifters bench much more than they can row. This may not be the case for beginners or "intermediates" but I'd say this more has to do with the less-specialized training (most of the big lifts are trained in a similar fashion and weight moved is still relatively low).
With the bb row, strict or use of SOME body language, I'd imagine that row strength is more in line with an incline press or close grip bench should a lifter train rows at a higher intensities. For the bench you have a stronger stretch reflex at the bottom and the body is supported by the bench both of which you don't have for the row. |

Now that was helpful in that it made some sense why I can bench about 60 pounds more than I row (very strict for both). I never really did bb rows before, but I did pull cables and such, so it wasn't like I ignored it, and I didn't really focus on bench either. But, my bench is still way over my row, even though now I am seriously trying to bring up my row.
However, I do completely get the idea of rows are at a bit of a disadvantage in that I row from the floor (No stretch) and a fluid base (Bent legs). Now that makes some sense! I have been very frustrated by the opposite of Kit's problems. My rows are miles weaker than my bench, and I still don't really focus on bench either, I'd rather put it OH. So, to answer his original question, you think rows should be around 80-85% of bench? Like an Incline press? So, a 220 bench and a 175-180 row is about right? |
