Viking Rock

Here upnorth we have people who still have faith in the old goods (odin, thor etc). Amongs there is a genre of music here called Viking rock (swe- Vikinga Rock) and its pretty awesome, not always good, but awesom. Songs are about Patriotism, Vikings, Wars and other manliness.

Well, I've been wondering for quite some time about how the ancient belief systems are viewed in Scandinavia, being as that constitutes 50% of my heritage. The music you've shared with us suggests to me that there is at least a fringe of youth rediscovering their roots. But tell me about the old people. Do the old people still hold on to their ancestry? Have they passed the Sagas down to the youth, or are they being rediscovered?

Old people or mostly christian but when it comes to the Sagas, most people for several generation have read the old viking tales and its a part of education in school too, both about our heritage, the old gods and aasgard, and the some of the more famous sagas are read as part of history class in younger age.

We had to learn "Audun and the bear" in order to translate the passage in an exam along with other passages. And did the Islendingabok during lectures, as an extra translation piece.

For my dissertation, I compared the way in which the sagas from the Scandinavian countries diverged from on-screen portrayals and modern interpretations of the Vikings etc. Pretty interesting stuff, though the names with all the inflections and typing them up made it really slow going at points

Thank you, swede. That's just what I was wondering. Also was curious as to how much of an influence Christianity has had (not that that's good or bad). I've seen a bit of an awakening in my own belief system too. A hunger that the Christianity the West has been spoonfed for a thousand years or so hasn't been able to satisfy.

One more question on kind of a lighter topic. Danes and Finns, Scandinavians or not?
